Travel Articles: Planning, Destinations, Themes, Photo Albums, and Travel Photography
Introduction
Our Travel Articles focus on planning our forthcoming trips, destinations we have visited, themes of our visits, photographs albums, and travel photography. The purpose of these travel articles is to add value to our eBooks prior to, and after, publication. For example, writing about our planning and research for each trip will add to the quality of the trip. Our eBooks cannot contain every photo taken during our trip so including photograph albums on our website is a way of adding value. Finally, not every trip or destination is worthy of an eBook so we can write short articles about trips and post them to our website.
Travel Articles -Planning
A relatively new approach for OS Wayfarer is to post travel articles which focus on the research and planning for our future travel. We started by with a series about our trip to Athens: Should we visit Athens? This series eventually led to our latest eBook: Six Days in Athens. The Athens eBook will differ from our earlier eBooks, in that, it will have culture as its overarching theme – check it out!
Another series has started about our forthcoming trip to Cornwall which will cover a range of topics from small fishing villages, to planning, places to visit, photography, and accommodation.
We are concerned about the low number of eBooks we have about our own state – Queensland. So, we have a post which discusses this problem: Our Queensland Travel Choices.
Travel Articles – Destinations
Occasionally we write articles about places we have visited. It is generally, but not always, about places that don’t warrant an eBook. For example, on one trip to the United Kingdom, we visited Winston Churchill’s home known as Chartwell. Subsequent we wrote an article titled Winston Churchill and Chartwell. Also, after our return from the Isle of Skye, we posted a short article about the Isle of Skye (including a photo album).
Travel Articles – Themes
During our trip along the Queensland Coast, we targeted heritage-listed buildings in the major coastal towns, as a theme for the trip. On return, in addition to publishing our eBook – Queensland Coastal Towns – A Road Trip, we wrote an article looking at the heritage-listed buildings in Townsville; an article about Queensland Post Offices; and another on Queensland Schools of Arts. Architecture, or more accurately the facades of heritage-listed buildings is a theme we like, and an appendix on architecture can be found in our eBook on Prague.
More recently, we have decided to shift our eBook structure from a day-to-day account of our trips to a more culture-focused account. The day-to-day schedule and comment will still be present but in an Appendix. Our rationale is contained in our post – Travel eBook Structure: Culture Focus. Our only eBook so far which begins this journey is – Six Days in Athens.
Travel Articles – Photo Albums
This year (2020) will be the year of the photo album. If I keep telling myself this, it will happen, won’t it? At present we have an Istanbul photo album as a result of our trip there. During our last trip to London, we walked Regent’s Canal. This was completed in sections and covered the full length of the canal. The photographs from these walks will be the next photo album to be posted.
Travel Articles – Travel Photography
Improving our (i.e. Graham’s!) travel photography has been a real challenge. I do not have an aptitude for photography, so it has taken a concerted effort to build my skills. In addition, we have slowly improved the quality of our equipment over the years. When our journey started I used a Nikon D3100 coupled with a Tamon 18-270mm “travel” lens. This was recommended to me by the presenter at a weekend photography course. The next addition was a Tamron 10-24mm wide-angle lens. This was to designed to improve the photographs taken of historical/heritage buildings on our Queensland Coastal Towns Road Trip and I reckon it worked.
However, the biggest improvement has occurred with the purchase of a Nikon D7200 DX and a Nikon AF-S 16-80MM 2.8 – 4.0 DX VR lens. Quality-wise this is the best camera set-up my skills deserve! The next “upgrade” will be to maintain the same level of equipment but with less weight. To lug this set-up around takes commitment. For example, I am considering the Nikon Z50 as a possible purchase as this is a real light-weight camera most suitable for travel. However, it will require new lenses as well. Oh dear – such dilemmas!
Recently, I purchased a DJI Osmo Pocket to supplement the other photography gear. This opened up a whole new area for exploration and learning. I’m already considering a DJI Osmo Action to go with the Osmo Pocket. These items will keep me out of mischief for a while!
