Limehouse Basin Lock forms the exit from Limehouse Basin to the River Thames. We encountered the Limehouse Basin Lock at the end of our last Regent’s Canal Walk. The Canal and River Trust, which manages the basin, have produced a very useful Limehouse Basin Map/Activity Guide (PDF) which points out key landmarks around the basin.

To successfully reach the Thames maritime craft are required to negotiate the lock and pass by an opened Narrow Street swing bridge. Attendants, presumably from the Harbour Master’s Office, facilitate the exit process. Fortunately, we were able to witness a yacht exit Limehouse Basin and enter the River Thames. The series of six photographs shown below capture this process. An attendant can be seen in the photographs operating the lock gates and the Narrow Street swing bridge.

Limehouse Ship Lock Open - Basin End

The lock gates have been opened by the attendant. The yacht can now enter the lock.

Limehouse Basin Lock - Yatch enters from Basin

The yacht enters the lock. Having had a few holidays on canal narrow-boats, I would imagine it is wonderful to have a lock attendant.

Limehouse Basin Lock - Yatch Inside

The yacht waits inside the lock for the basin side gates to close. Once those are closed the attendant will open the Thames side gates.

Limehouse Basin Lock - Yatch waits for gates to open

The attendant has opened the lock gates to the Thames river. However the Narrow Street Swing Bridge must be opened before the yacht can proceed. Another job for the attendant.

Yatch passes the open Narrow Street Swing Bridge

The yacht passes the withdrawn Narrow Street Swing Bridge on its way to the Thames river. The attendant can be seen in the background. Traffic lights and boom gates control road traffic on Narrow Street.

Limehouse Basin Lock - Yacht leaves

The yacht finally escapes to the river Thames. The attendant can be seen bringing the Narrow Street Bridge back to its normal position
